    The Book Thief Trailer

I didn’t even know they were making a movie based on The Book Thief, which I read this time last year, but this was released a few days ago: I was really digging the trailer until the 90s voiceover started, but it does really look promising. It seems they’ve dropped Death as the narrator, which is a shame as that really added a lot to the story in my opinion, but I can see that being tricky to film. And who knows, maybe he there but just wasn’t featured in the trailer. Geoffrey Rush as Hans is a terrific choice, I think.

    Locke and Key Trailer

Locke and Key was being made into a television series, but unfortunately Fox passed on the pilot. Looks like it could have been interesting, although it is hard to tell just from a trailer.

Directors Guild of America’s Tribute to Steven Spielberg

If you follow any weblog that covers film news, you’ve probably seen this, but if not I thought I’d post it here. Hosted by J.J. Abrams and James Cameron, it’s just under two hours of discussion with Steven Speilberg on how some of your (or at least my) favourite stories came to be. At the very least it’s an interesting look into one man’s approach to storytelling.

    Game of Thrones Digital Effects

SlashFilm posted two videos today showing the digital effects that take place in the Game of Thrones television series. I’m usually not one to get too excited for digital effects in movies. If it’s not done flawlessly, it completely removes me from the story. Particularily with CGI characters. These videos are neat, though. I always forget just how much is done digitally these days and how seemless it is. The first video is from SSVFX, and it focuses more on inserting items and crowds into scenes. The second video, which includes some spoilers, is from BlueBolt and focuses on scene backdrops. If you haven’t been watching Game of Thrones and…

    The Hobbit

Peter Jackson has released the first of a series of video logs chronicling the shooting of The Hobbit. I have very fond memories of this book from my childhood, even more than The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’m looking forward to seeing the final product, even if it has to be in 3D. [via]

    The Monster of Nix

The Monster of Nix, the highly anticipated animated musical by Dutch artist and filmmaker Rosto, is nearing completion. The 30 minute long, existentialist fairy tale will hit the screens Spring 2011. What excites me about this project is that it features the voice acting of Terry Gilliam and Tom Waits! It’s worth keeping an eye on just for that. [via]
