    Hiatus

I’ve decided to take some time off from this blog and think about how I’d like to approach it again. I’ve written a review for every book and comic I’ve read in the last seven years, and while that has actually been a rewarding and worthwhile experience, it’s started to feel a bit like homework. I really enjoy writing on here and interacting with other bloggers, but I think I need to figure out a way to keep it as an enjoyable hobby rather than a self-imposed obligation. So, the plan is I’ll be back in a month or two. I’ll still be reading weblogs and leaving the occasional comment,…

    March in Review

Books Acquired: N/A Books Read: Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank Lumberjanes, Vol. 1: Beware the Kitten Holy by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Faith Hicks, Brooke A. Allen Oh hey, I have a blog! Nearly forgot! I didn’t finish a lot of books in March, but I did finally read Anne Frank’s diary. It was one of those books that others read in high school that I always felt like I’d missed. I’ll write a longer post on it, but I really enjoyed it. I went the audiobook route, which worked really well. March was a busy work month, but there…

Books Acquired: Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You by David Chariandy Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules by Tony Cliff At My Table by Nigella Lawson Lumberjanes, Vol. 1 by Noelle Stevenson Books Read: Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson Made In Scotland by Billy Connolly We Are Displaced by Malala Yousafzai Masters of Doom by David Kushner Noir by Christopher Moore February is always a bit of a lame month. I didn’t get a lot of physical reading in, but I did get through quite a few audiobooks. I started the month with Kidnapped, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Possibly my favourite Robert Louis…

Books Acquired: N/A Books Read: The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt Paper Girls, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang Educated by Tara Westover All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai Not a lot happened this month. I was sick for a recent chunk of it, and Lee-Ann was away for most of the month with training, so I have a wee bit of the cabin fever. It’s been a great start of the year as far as media is concerned, though. Everything I read this year has been great. Both Educated and The Sisters Brothers would have been high on my top-ten list last year, and Wandersong and…

    2018 in Review

This was a pretty good year. Not for the world, obviously, or the future of mankind, but for me it was. We travelled a little and generally enjoyed ourselves. My motorcycle lessons were really a highlight at the end of the year. Being on a bike is just a great feeling, and it had been a while since I really tried to properly learn a new physical skill. It was fun starting off completely useless and seeing myself get better. Reading-wise, the first half of the year was quite good and the second half of the year fell apart, but that happens. No use dwelling on it. This year I’m…

    December in Review

Books Acquired: N/A Books Read: The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs by Stephen Brusatte The Seeds of Time by John Wyndham Saga, Vol. 9 by Brian K. Vaughan Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Happy New Year! Hope everyone got a little time-off in December. We had great Christmas here, nice and quiet, just the way I like it. I don’t have to travel anymore this time of year, so I got in some prime sweatpants action. I got Lee-Ann a pasta machine for Christmas, so we’re looking at a carb-filled 2019. View this post on Instagram Our first attempt at homemade pasta! We have some…

Books Acquired: Saga, Vol. 9 by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples Paper Girls, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang Books Read: Hell House by Richard Matheson Head On by John Scalzi Misery by Stephen King X-Men: Days of Future Past by Chris Claremont, John Byrne We’ve hit December already! Unfortunately, my few months of reading drought here will mean I won’t be hitting most of my goals, but that’s okay. I enjoy making goals more than I hate missing them, so it all works out. Feeling a bit more in the swing of things now, though, so I expect the reading to pick up again. Since keeping track…

    October in Review

Books Acquired: N/A Books Read: Akira, Vol. 3 by Katsuhiro Otomo Jupiter’s Travels by Ted Simon Normal by Warren Ellis We began the month with a trip to Disneyland. We had some friends taking their children there for a week and decided to tag along, which we also did a few years ago. The beginning of October is a great time to go, actually, as they have the Halloween decorations and events out already but the Halloween crowds haven’t really arrived yet. We also used the Disneyland app this time, which is a complete game-changer. It felt like we barely spent any time in lines, at least relative to how…

    September in Review

Books Acquired: N/A Books Read: Property Values by Charles Demers I’m a one-book-a-month man now, apparently. Savouring a few pages each night while you gluttons fly through hundreds a day. Just disgraceful, if you ask me. I’m hoping to get back into reading and writing a bit more now that the rainy season has hit. My head’s been all over the place the last couple of months, so it’s probably time to consciously relax a little. During September I was really focused on learning to ride motorcycles. I took a week-long course (partially taught by Lee-Ann, actually), and basically spent every bit of daylight either at work or on a…

    August in Review

Books Acquired: Property Values by Charles Demers Books Read: Sailing Alone around the World by Joshua Slocum If We All Spat at Once They’d Drown by Sam Wallman (Editor) This was a bit of a weird month for me. I read a single comic/art book, listened to one audiobook, and played almost no games. I just couldn’t focus on anything this month. I did turn 36, so maybe my mind is starting to go. To celebrate my deteriorating mental faculties, we decided to spend a week in Oahu. On the flight over, I was unfortunately packed in with a crowd of screaming children. I was fine for the first half…
