Oh hey, I have a blog! Nearly forgot! I didn’t finish a lot of books in March, but I did finally read Anne Frank’s diary. It was one of those books that others read in high school that I always felt like I’d missed. I’ll write a longer post on it, but I really enjoyed it. I went the audiobook route, which worked really well.
March was a busy work month, but there was also a bit of unnaturally good weather for this time of year. I think the motorcycle gods were looking down on us.
Movies watched:
Annihilation (2018) – Loved the book, and this was a decent take on it. A lot of interesting stuff from the books were cut, which obviously had to be done, but as a result, it really didn’t hit the creepy highs of the original story. Still good fun, though, and well-shot.
Schindler’s List (1993) – I’ve been meaning to watch this for ages and just never made time for what I thought was essentially going to be a three-and-a-half hour reconstruction of an Auschwitz documentary, an important but not really enjoyable experience. I finally sat down and watched it, and while it is obviously a painful story with a horrific backdrop, it’s also incredibly gripping and moving. A great film. I really loved so much about it.
Christopher Robin (2018) – This was good, but I feel like I didn’t really connect with it very well. It felt a bit clumsy, like there were disagreements on what age group they were targeting. I still enjoyed the, somewhat dark at times, nostalgia trip.
TV watched:
The Big Family Cooking Showdown: Season 2 (2018) – I watch all cookery programs that end up on Netflix. This was pretty good. I like that there’s no real drama, just families that get along with each other trying to cook a meal under pressure. They do a good job of choosing very (for the most part) watchable families.
Chef’s Table: Volume 6 (2019) – This was one of my favourite volumes of Chef’s Table so far. All of the stories were great. I particularly enjoyed Asma Khan’s episode, with her trying to overcome and abolish the stigma of being a second daughter in India. They were all great, though.
Queer Eye: Season 3 (2019) – My main complaint with the last two seasons was that it felt like they were aiming for tears, to the point where it was starting to feel a bit emotionally manipulative almost. This season felt much more natural. Lee-Ann is still reeling from his comment on capri pants, though.
Games played:
Trials Rising (PS4)(2019) – I’m having a lot of fun with this still, although I’ve slowed way down. I’ve hit that grind I’ve been hearing so much about. It’s a shame, really, because I really enjoy the Extreme difficulty tracks in these games, but I’m not entirely sure I’m going to get to see them in this version.
The Division 2 (PS4)(2019) – I’m probably about halfway through the main story content in this now, and I’m really enjoying it. If they had bothered to come up with any story whatsoever or hire a writer for the dialogue, I’d be in love with this. As it stands, I’m just enjoying shooting people and finding shiny new guns, which has been enough for now.
Come say hello:
What have you been reading/watching/playing this month?

I agree with you about Schindler’s List, harrowing but gripping – evidently the little girl in the red coat is real and has her own story told in a book, although I can’t remember who by.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that. I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.

I avoided Schindler’s List for much the same reasons but since have enjoyed it twice on DVD.

I think I’ll likely re-watch it again soon as well.
