I am still very much enjoying this series. I feel like the plot was getting away from them a few volumes back, but the jump forward in time and has really brought everything together again.
I love the whole cast and the interactions between them. Petrichor has turned out to be a fantastic addition, adding a great mix of humour and unhinged aggression to the story. The way Hazel has turned to her as a confidant and friend, against her will in many ways, is a great subplot too. I’ve been enjoying watching that relationship develop.
This one deals with some pretty heavy issues while managing to balance humour and a respect for the subject matter. The opening page with a banner declaring ‘Welcome to Abortion Town!’ might make it seem like that’s not the case, but it felt like the events had a weight to them that made sense. This deals with late-term abortion and intrauterine death and illustrates not just how parents mourn and process such a thing but also the younger members of the family, and they’ve done it in an interesting way, I think, by projecting who the child could have become, rather than having it be more of an abstract concept on the page.
I still love this series. It’s funny, filthy, interesting and exciting. I do wonder how long they’ll go on with it, as I would love a slightly more solid plotline to eventually shine through, but I’m enjoying the journey.
