This is the first episode of The Pod: The Animated Adventures, Techno is not a Joke, starring Julian Barratt and Tim Hope. They’re “a late eighties electronic dance outfit trying to cope with the mid nineties post rave come down”. I really like the animation style, and the quirky humour, and it’s a nice flashback to my techno-loving youth.

Now that I’ve gotten my Bah Humbugs out a little, here’s a Christmas special I really enjoyed. It aired a few years ago on BBC Three, but I only just found it recently. It’s a ridiculous rock opera of the birth of Christ, written by Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade, done in the style of the original rock operas of the seventies.

The special is full of great comedians, but most of them are basically unknown in North America. I’ve been trolling through BBC comedies lately, so I’ll probably be posting more of their work in the future. Everyone does a great job in this, but I found Julian Barratt, of The Mighty Boosh, particularly hilarious.

Here it is in its entirety:

Due to a recommendation from Chris on a previous post about The Flight of the Conchords, I’m currently watching the third season of The Mighty Boosh.

It’s a surreal British comedy that’s difficult to describe. At its core, it’s about two friends going off on strange, magical adventures. It’s very colourful and creative. There are clever jokes and gutter jokes, singing and dancing, demon grannies and talking apes. It’s really all over the place.

When I first started to watch the series, I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. The more I watched it, the more I enjoyed it, and now I’m pretty much obsessed with it. The third season is airing right now and is looking even better than the last two. I also watched the DVD of their live theatrical act, which was possibly even better than the series.

So, thank you Chris. I now have one more obsession to add the the list.

Here’s the introduction to their first show. It’s a taste of their humour.
